The Chairperson of the African Union (AU), H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has appointed Uganda’s former Minister of Foreign Affairs and former President of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), Hon. Sam Kutesa, to a newly established High-Level Panel of Eminent Experts.
The Panel will be tasked with reviewing the AU’s Governance, Peace and Security Framework, a cornerstone of the continental body’s agenda to strengthen democracy, stability, and conflict resolution mechanisms across Africa.
Kutesa’s appointment brings decades of diplomatic and political experience to the Panel.
During his tenure as Uganda’s Foreign Minister, he played a pivotal role in regional and international peace and security initiatives.
His leadership at the UNGA also underscored his global standing in multilateral diplomacy.
The Panel is expected to provide strategic recommendations that will guide reforms within the AU’s governance architecture, bolster peace-building efforts, and reinforce Africa’s collective response to security challenges.
Kutesa was the Minister of Foreign Affairs in the Cabinet of Uganda, a position he held from 13 January 2005 and maintained through cabinet reshuffles until May 2021.
