First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports, Hon. Janet K. Museveni, has called on Ugandan women to remain steadfast guardians of peace and to mobilise support for the National Resistance Movement (NRM) as the country heads into the 2026 general elections.

Speaking on Thursday at the Grand Women’s Celebration organised by the NRM National Women’s League at Kololo Independence Grounds, Mrs Museveni hailed women as the “cement that fortifies the house of Uganda,” urging them to reject violence and promote national unity during the electoral period.

Addressing a gathering that included Vice President Jessica Alupo, Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja, Cabinet ministers, Members of Parliament, religious and cultural leaders, and NRM officials, the First Lady conveyed President Yoweri Museveni’s gratitude to women across the country for their unwavering support.

“I am here to bring you his gratitude and appreciation for the sincere value you accord him as your President, brother, father and grandfather,” she said, noting that the President would have loved to attend the event in person.

Mrs Museveni credited the NRM government for deliberately advancing women’s emancipation through expanded access to education, healthcare, political participation and economic empowerment.

She highlighted landmark achievements, including women occupying the country’s top leadership positions of Vice President, Prime Minister and Speaker of Parliament, as well as growing female influence in public service, sports, civil society and the private sector.

On economic empowerment, she cited government programmes such as Emyooga, the Parish Development Model and agricultural transformation initiatives, which have enabled millions of women to access finance, skills and markets.

She encouraged women to consolidate these gains and challenged them to establish a women-led bank to advance their financial interests, drawing inspiration from Bangladesh’s Grameen Bank model.

As the election approaches, the First Lady appealed to women to use their influence to preserve peace, urging daily prayers for stability and victory for the NRM.

She also cautioned against political actors who incite youth to violence for personal gain, while calling on all eligible Ugandans to exercise their constitutional right to vote leaders of integrity.
