UPDF Begins Kampala Patrols to Boost Security During Election Period

The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) have commenced patrols in Kampala as part of enhanced security measures ahead of the general elections next week, military authorities have said.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the Acting Director of Defence Public Information, Col Chris Magezi, said the patrols are a preventive security measure aimed at maintaining law and order and ensuring the safety of the public.

“There is no cause for alarm,” Col Magezi emphasized, noting that the patrols are being conducted in coordination with the Uganda Police Force to reassure residents and deter any potential acts of violence.

He warned, however, that threats of violence issued by some political actors and their supporters during the election period will not be taken lightly by security agencies.

“Working alongside the police, our objective is to make sure everyone is safe and assured. Public and private property will be kept safe and secure,” Col Magezi said.

The UPDF spokesperson added that any cases of criminality or actions that threaten public order will be dealt with swiftly and in full compliance with the laws of Uganda.

Security agencies have in recent weeks heightened vigilance in urban areas, particularly Kampala, as the country enters a sensitive political period. Authorities have repeatedly called on political actors and their supporters to conduct their activities peacefully and within the law.
