KAMPALA — The Uganda Police Force has announced nationwide restrictions on road and water transport as the country observes National Cleaning Day on Saturday, July 25, 2026.
According to a police statement dated July 24, the cleaning exercise will run from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. across the country, with citizens expected to remain within their communities and participate in sanitation activities.
Police said vehicles, motorcycles, bicycles and vessels will not be allowed to operate on roads or water bodies during the three-hour exercise, except in emergency situations.
The government says the initiative is intended to promote environmental cleanliness, improve public health and prevent diseases associated with poor sanitation.
Police urged motorists, traders, institutions, community leaders and the general public to comply with the directive and actively participate in cleaning roads, markets, drainage channels and other public spaces.
Normal activities and traffic movement are expected to resume at 10:00 a.m.
Emergency services, including ambulances and people travelling for scheduled medical treatment, will be exempted. Patients have been advised to carry relevant medical documents, while medical personnel should have their identification.
Security vehicles on official duty and cross-border traffic travelling along major transport routes will also be exempted from the restrictions.
Police advised members of the public to cooperate with security personnel and avoid confrontations during enforcement of the directive. Anyone with concerns has been asked to seek assistance from the nearest police officer or supervising officer.
The National Cleaning Days Initiative will be observed on the last Saturday of every month as part of government efforts to encourage collective responsibility for sanitation and create cleaner, healthier and safer communities.
