President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, the National Chairman of the NRM and Commander-in-Chief of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces, was warmly welcomed yesterday by cheering crowds in Busia as he made his way through the town.

Museveni was in Busia for the launch of the Wagagai Gold Refinery Project.

Among the jubilant crowds who lined up the roads in Busia, were supporters of Dr. Musa Lumumba, who is vying for the position of NRM Vice Chairperson for the Eastern Region.

In photos shared from the event, Lumumba’s supporters were seen strategically positioned along the roadside, clad in Museveni-branded T-shirts and waving posters of Dr. Lumumba.

Their visibility ensured that the President could spot them as part of the larger enthusiastic crowd that turned up to greet him.

Team Lumumba described the moment as encouraging and reaffirming for their campaign. “We thank the Almighty God — for the work He began in us, He will surely accomplish it,” Lumumba said, quoting Philippians 1:6 to emphasize their faith in divine guidance throughout the political journey.

Dr. Lumumba, the National Coordinator of Bazzukulu Doctors, declared his bid for the CEC seat and has since received notable endorsements, including from First Deputy Prime Minister and NRM Vice Chairperson (Female), Rt. Hon. Rebecca Kadaga.

His candidature has injected fresh momentum into the race, which has attracted strong contenders such as the incumbent Mike Mukula, Christopher Buyela, Defence Minister Hon. Oboth Oboth, and Calvin Echodu.

As the NRM’s internal campaigns gather steam ahead of the Delegates Conference, Lumumba’s growing visibility on the campaign trail, amplified by moments like the Busia welcome, is being closely watched by political observers.

With the conference drawing closer, analysts note that the ability of candidates to rally grassroots support will be key in shaping the outcome of what promises to be a highly competitive CEC election.
