NEW YORK, September 26, 2026 — United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has commended Uganda for its contributions to regional peace and security and praised the government’s response to the recent Ebola outbreak.

Guterres made the remarks during a meeting with Uganda’s Vice President, H.E. Jessica Alupo, on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York.

According to the United Nations, the Secretary-General expressed appreciation for Uganda’s role in promoting regional peace and security, as well as its leadership across various multilateral forums.

Guterres also commended the Ugandan government for what he described as its successful response to the recent Ebola outbreak.

The meeting also provided an opportunity for Guterres and Alupo to exchange views on strengthening cooperation between Uganda and the United Nations.

The discussions come as Uganda continues to position itself as a key regional actor on peace and security issues, while engaging actively in multilateral diplomacy at the United Nations and other international forums.

Uganda has contributed personnel to regional and international peace and security efforts and has consistently highlighted the importance of multilateral cooperation in addressing conflicts, humanitarian challenges and development priorities.

The meeting between Guterres and Alupo is part of Uganda’s diplomatic engagements during the 81st UN General Assembly, where the country is seeking to advance its interests on regional peace, development and international cooperation.

Alupo is leading Uganda’s delegation at the General Assembly following President Yoweri Museveni’s decision to remain in Uganda amid ongoing national engagements.

The Vice President has held a series of high-level meetings with foreign leaders and international officials during the UNGA, highlighting Uganda’s diplomatic, economic and development priorities.
