The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Abas Byakagaba, yesterday hosted H.E. Etsegenet Yimenu, Ethiopia’s Ambassador to Uganda, for discussions centered on regional and international cooperation.
According to a post by the police chief, they both discussed the importance of enhancing existing collaboration, particularly in areas of mutual interest such as security, law enforcement, and information sharing. They agreed to explore new frameworks for cooperation that would deepen the longstanding ties between Uganda and Ethiopia.
This included talks on collaboration mechanisms through regional and international organizations, like the Eastern Africa Police Chiefs Cooperation Organization (EAPCO), INTERPOL, the African Union (AU), and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD). Both sides emphasized the importance of these platforms in enhancing security coordination, intelligence sharing, and joint responses to emerging threats.

Uganda and Ethiopia enjoy warm bilateral relations, rooted in shared commitments to regional stability, African solidarity, and mutual development. Both countries have worked closely within the African Union and IGAD frameworks to promote peace and security in the Horn of Africa and the wider region.
Ambassador Yimenu commended Uganda’s contributions to regional peacekeeping efforts and emphasized Ethiopia’s readiness to continue strengthening relations with Kampala.
Byakagaba, on his part, reaffirmed the Uganda Police Force’s commitment to working closely with Ethiopian counterparts and supporting initiatives of mutual interest.
He also expressed appreciation for the cordial relations between the Ethiopian community in Uganda and the Police Force, noting that such positive engagement strengthens people-to-people ties alongside diplomatic relations.
This engagement reflects a broader push by both nations to consolidate diplomatic, political, and security cooperation as they navigate evolving regional dynamics.
Ethiopia’s Ambassador was accompanied by the Head of Political Affairs at the Ethiopian Embassy, Mr Robel Admassu.
