Government has responded to issues raised by Leader of the Opposition (LOP) Joel Ssenyonyi regarding medical interns and the continued closure of some Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs).
Raising matters of national importance on the floor of Parliament, Ssenyonyi asked Government to account for the alleged abduction and continued disappearance of several Ugandans, including Christopher Goddi, William Baliza and Sam Mugumya.
He also raised concerns over the closure of NGOs, saying the action had affected the livelihoods of many Ugandans who depended on the organisations for employment, and sought clarification on the facilitation of medical interns.
Responding on behalf of Government, Government Chief Whip Dr Jane Ruth Aceng said Government-sponsored medical interns have already been deployed and provided with the necessary funding.
Dr Aceng, who also serves as Minister of Health, said the issue of medical internship financing and planning had been presented before Cabinet, which directed the Ministry to return with comprehensive data on medical interns, senior house officers and annual intake projections before a final decision is made.
On the closure of NGOs, Dr Aceng asked the Speaker of Parliament to allow the Minister of Internal Affairs and the Minister for the Presidency to appear before the House and provide a detailed response on the matter.
The response comes amid continued parliamentary debate on accountability, public service delivery and the role of civil society organisations in Uganda.
