New York, January 5, 2026 — The Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), representing 121 member states, has strongly condemned what it described as an act of aggression by the United States against the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, warning that the attack poses a serious threat to international peace and security.
Delivering a statement at an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council, Uganda, in its capacity as Chair of the Coordinating Bureau of the Non-Aligned Movement, said the U.S. military action carried out in the early hours of January 3, 2026, targeted civilian and military locations in Caracas and other Venezuelan cities.
Venezuela is a member of the NAM. Last weekend’s aggression resulted in the kidnapping of President Nicolás Maduro Moros and First Lady Cilia Flores.
NAM stated that the attacks constitute a blatant violation of the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, as well as established norms of international law. The bloc said the actions amount to an act of war against Venezuela and undermine regional and global stability, while endangering the lives of Venezuelan civilians.
“The Coordinating Bureau of the Non-Aligned Movement categorically condemns the act of aggression perpetrated by the United States of America against the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela,” the statement read.
The movement demanded the immediate cessation of all hostilities against Venezuela and called for full respect for the country’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, political independence, and inalienable right to self-determination. NAM further insisted that those responsible for the aggression be held accountable.
The statement also reiterated the inviolability of immunities accorded to Heads of State and Government under international law, describing them as a fundamental pillar of sovereign equality, peaceful coexistence, and stable international relations. NAM warned that any actions undermining these principles risk eroding multilateralism and weakening the international legal order.
Reiterating its solidarity with the people and government of Venezuela, the Non-Aligned Movement stressed that military solutions are not viable avenues for resolving international disputes and urged the international community to pursue dialogue and peaceful means in accordance with the UN Charter.
