Kampala — The inaugural Africa Health Summit opened today at the Kololo Ceremonial Grounds, drawing Ministers of Health, global and continental health leaders, private-sector executives, academia, and development partners for a landmark gathering focused on Africa’s path to health sovereignty.
Held under the theme “Reclaiming Africa’s Health Future: From Dependency to Sovereignty through Innovation and Solidarity,” the Summit—hosted by Uganda’s Ministry of Health—has convened over 1,000 delegates to chart a new course for the continent’s health systems, local manufacturing capacity, and innovation ecosystem.
Presiding as Chief Guest, Rt. Hon. Amason Jeffah Kingi, EGH, Speaker of the Senate of the Republic of Kenya.
The event is attended by government officials including Deputy Speaker, Thomas Tayebwa, Minister of Health Dr Jane Ruth Aceng, PS Dr Diana Atwine, members of the diplomatic corps and health officials.
Throughout the day, delegates will be engaging in high-level dialogues on health financing, local production of medicines and vaccines, innovation, and regulatory reform. The Summit also showcased cutting-edge African solutions in diagnostics, digital health, and vaccine development.
After the day’s summit proceedings, attention will shifted to the 6th Annual Heroes in Health Awards (HIHA), honouring outstanding individuals and institutions driving excellence, innovation, and self-care in Uganda.
The Summit continues to position Uganda at the centre of Africa’s collective push for a resilient, self-reliant, and innovation-driven health future.
