Speaker of Parliament Rt. Hon. Anita Among on Saturday evening narrowly escaped a road accident after a trailer almost collided with her official vehicle in Mukono District.
According to Chris Obore, the Director of Communication and Public Affairs at Parliament, the incident occurred at around 5:45 p.m. as the Speaker was returning to Kampala from Bugweri District, where she had been campaigning for President Yoweri Museveni in her capacity as NRM Second National Vice Chairperson (Female).
Eyewitnesses and officials said the trailer, which was heading towards Jinja, suddenly swerved towards the Speaker’s vehicle after some cars in her convoy had passed. The Speaker’s driver quickly moved to the edge of the road, preventing what could have been a serious collision.
Police in Mukono have since detained the trailer driver, Lubega Ivan (32), and his co-driver, Waiswa Amis, to assist with ongoing investigations.
Mr. Obore confirmed that the Speaker and her team escaped unharmed, and normal traffic resumed shortly after the incident.
