President Yoweri Museveni has pledged government support to tea farmers in Kanungu District through a new special fund that will enable growers to access affordable fertilisers.
While addressing residents at Rwere Playground, the President noted that farmers—particularly those managing large estates—had raised concerns about the rising cost of fertilisers, which threatens productivity in one of the district’s most important economic sectors.
Museveni said the government will channel the support through farmers’ SACCOs, following a model similar to the ongoing plans for sugarcane growers and fishing communities. He also encouraged smallholder farmers to continue embracing the four-acre model, emphasising that it remains a reliable path to wealth creation for households with limited land.
Reaffirming the National Resistance Movement’s long-standing focus on security, Museveni reminded the people of Kanungu that peace is the first of the NRM’s seven core contributions. He said communities living along the Uganda–DRC border best understand the value of stability, noting that Uganda has maintained peace by investing strategically in defence without relying on foreign forces.
The President further highlighted infrastructure improvements achieved under the NRM government and announced that the 149-kilometre Hamurwa–Kerere–Kanungu–Butogota–Hamayanza–Ifasha–Ikunza road will be upgraded. He assured residents that government will prioritise the rehabilitation of the stretch to boost trade, connectivity, and economic growth in the region.
