Ghana is in mourning after a tragic military helicopter crash in the Ashanti region claimed the lives of eight people, including the country’s Minister of Defence and Minister of Environment, according to an official government spokesperson.
The Ghana Armed Forces confirmed that the military aircraft, which had taken off from the capital Accra at 09:12 local time, lost contact with radar while en route to Obuasi, a major gold-mining town in the Ashanti region. The helicopter was carrying five passengers and three crew members at the time of the incident.
The ill-fated journey was intended for a national event in Obuasi, but it ended in tragedy when the aircraft went “off the radar”, prompting search and rescue operations.
Wreckage was later found, and all eight individuals on board were confirmed dead.
Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, in a nationally televised address, expressed deep sorrow over the loss of the high-ranking officials and announced that the country’s flags would fly at half-mast in their honour.
