The contest for the NRM’s National Female Youth MP flag bearer has become one of the most closely watched races within the ruling party.
With candidates such as Diana Ampaire, Gold Ikyiriza, and Mercy Katwesigye vying for the slot, the dynamics remain fluid. Yet, several developments give Ampaire a strong chance of emerging victorious.
Postponed at the recent NRM Delegates conference, the race is now being compared the country’s top elective posts due the the need for aspirants to traverse the country in search for votes.
The Fiona Nakku Factor
A key turning point in the race came with Fiona Nakku’s withdrawal and subsequent endorsement of Ampaire. Nakku had steadily climbed from being a relatively unknown figure in the race to one of the frontrunners. Her exit reshaped the contest and, crucially, brought her supporters into Ampaire’s corner.
This has given Ampaire a broader coalition than before and injected momentum into her campaign.
Personality and Youth Appeal
Ampaire’s greatest strength lies in her ability to connect with the youth. Delegates and grassroots leaders often describe her as approachable, relatable, and “liked for her personality.”
In a contest where emotional appeal and personal branding matter as much as policy, this likability has set her apart.
A Centered Agenda: Her Manifesto
Central to Ampaire’s campaign is her “Centered Agenda” manifesto, which outlines a vision of inclusive and focused leadership. She emphasizes youth empowerment, mentorship, job creation initiatives, and stronger participation of young women in decision-making processes.
Unlike some rivals whose campaigns are perceived as regionally anchored, Ampaire’s manifesto deliberately cuts across Northern, Eastern, Central, and Western Uganda, offering a national outlook. For delegates who want a candidate that represents the unity of the NRM youth, this broad-based agenda is appealing.
Timing and Election Uncertainty
The postponement of the NRM Delegates Conference, where the vote was initially expected to take place, has plunged the race into uncertainty. However, the delay could benefit Ampaire. It gives her more time to consolidate support, refine her message, and strengthen her networks within youth structures, while some rivals may lose momentum.
The Road Ahead
Although Gold Ikyiriza and Mercy Katwesigye remain serious contenders, Diana Ampaire’s growing coalition, her personality-driven appeal, and her clear, nationally oriented manifesto provide her with a strong edge. If she continues to capitalize on Nakku’s endorsement and keeps building consensus around her “Centered Agenda,” Ampaire could well emerge as the NRM’s National Female Youth MP flag bearer for 2026–2031.
Although, it must be said that the postponement has given candidates more time to comb areas they had not in search for the flag to join parliament.
