PHOTOS: Abu’s Camera, Museveni’s Legacy: Inside The Glitzy Launch Of “Moments With Mzee”

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has praised his photographer, Abu Mwesigwa for using photography to document Uganda’s transformation journey, describing his work as a powerful contribution to preserving the history and achievements of the NRM government.

In a speech delivered during the launch of Abu’s “Moments With Mzee” book launch at Serena Hotel on May 8, 2026, Museveni commended Mwesigwa for his discipline, patriotism and commitment to excellence.

The president’s speech was delivered by the country’s number two, Jessica Alupo.

Quoting a Chinese proverb that says, “It is better to see something once, than to hear about it a thousand times,” Museveni emphasized the impact of photography in capturing important events and preserving them through pictures and videos.

“This is why the art of photography, if utilized well, is very impactful; it helps to capture important events and preserve them in the form of pictures and videos,” Museveni said.

The President noted that Mwesigwa had mastered the art of photography and used his skills to support the Office of the President while documenting Uganda’s journey towards “transformation, unity and stability.”

“I commend Abu for his discipline and unwavering commitment to his Country. This proves that he is not just a careerist doing a job to earn a living. He has a bigger mission to preserve a record of the NRM’s achievements and contributions, through photography,” Museveni stated.

Museveni also revealed that the book carries autobiographical elements, recounting Mwesigwa’s personal struggles, including losing both parents at an early age.

According to the President, Mwesigwa overcame those hardships through discipline and focus, with support from his elder sister who helped raise and educate him.

The President said the story should inspire young people to avoid destructive lifestyles such as drunkenness and smoking, which he said derail many youths from achieving their dreams and contributing meaningfully to national development.

“I thank Abu for sharing his story. It will serve as a source of inspiration to many young people, whose strength and creativity should be employed to elevate themselves and their families,” Museveni said.

He concluded by thanking Mwesigwa for serving with “diligence, enthusiasm and commitment to excellence,” and wished him success in his future endeavors.

The launch attracted government officials, media personalities, photographers and invited guests who gathered to celebrate Mwesigwa’s work documenting key moments of President Museveni’s leadership and Uganda’s political history.
