KAMPALA | 28 July 2026 — UG DIPLOMAT’s exclusive report published earlier Tuesday that Nation Media Group’s (NMG) return was imminent has been confirmed, after Taifa Group and Nation Media Group officially announced the resumption of the company’s operations in Uganda.
Earlier in the day, UG DIPLOMAT exclusively reported that the reopening of NMG’s Ugandan operations was only a matter of time after Group Chief Executive Officer Geoffrey Odundo held a meeting with Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) Executive Director George William Nyombi Thembo, with sources indicating that the parties had agreed on the terms and conditions for the company’s return.
Hours later, Taifa Group—the majority shareholder of Nation Media Group through its subsidiary Taarifa Limited—issued a statement announcing that President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni had authorised the resumption of Nation Media Group’s operations in Uganda.

The investment group described the decision as “an important milestone for regional investment, media development and East African integration.”
Taifa Group Chairman Rostam Azizi thanked President Museveni for authorising the reopening and also expressed gratitude to Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, saying his support throughout the engagement had contributed to the positive outcome.
“I wish to express my sincere gratitude to His Excellency President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni for this important decision, and to General Muhoozi Kainerugaba for his support throughout the engagement that led to this positive outcome,” Azizi said.
He added that Taifa Group would continue investing in Uganda and the wider East African region through responsible investment, long-term partnerships and sustainable value creation.
In a separate statement, Nation Media Group Uganda confirmed that its television, print, radio and digital operations would resume progressively as operational arrangements are completed.
NMG Chairman Joe Muganda said the company’s immediate priority would be rebuilding its presence in Uganda, reconnecting with audiences, employees and commercial partners, while strengthening local content.
“Our immediate priority will be to restore our platforms responsibly, strengthen local content and provide Ugandans with credible, relevant and innovative journalism across print, broadcast and digital channels,” Muganda said.
The official announcement validates information first reported by UG DIPLOMAT, whose sources had indicated that negotiations between the government and Nation Media Group had been successfully concluded and that only a formal announcement remained.
The breakthrough follows a series of high-level engagements, including President Museveni’s recent meeting with Taifa Group Chairman Rostam Azizi at State House Entebbe, discussions between Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba and Nation Media Group executives, and the latest meeting between CEO Geoffrey Odundo and UCC Executive Director Nyombi Thembo, which signalled that the reopening process had entered its final phase.

With the official clearance now granted, Nation Media Group’s Ugandan brands—including NTV Uganda, Daily Monitor, Spark TV, KFM, Dembe FM and Ennyanda FM—are expected to return to full operation progressively in the coming days as administrative and technical arrangements are completed.
