Hon Lydia Wanyoto has officially written to National Chairman of the ruling party, Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, expressing her interest in contesting for the position of Speaker of the 12th Parliament.
Wanyoto noted that her more than 30 years of service to the National Resistance Movement government—at both national and international levels—have equipped her with the experience and capability to lead the House as Speaker.
She expressed confidence in her qualifications, stating that her long track record in public service positions her well to preside over the 12th Parliament.
Wanyoto argued that this long-standing service has equipped her with the institutional knowledge, leadership capacity, and governance experience required to preside over the country’s legislature as Speaker.
Wanyoto’s entry adds to the growing list of contenders positioning themselves for key leadership roles in the incoming Parliament, as political actors align ahead of the formation of the 12th House. They include minister Norbert Mao and Persis Namuganza among others.
The Speaker’s position remains one of the most influential offices in Uganda’s political system, responsible for presiding over parliamentary proceedings, ensuring order in debates, and guiding the legislative agenda in accordance with the Constitution and the rules of Parliament.
