The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has assured Ugandans that there will be no internet shutdown during the 2026 general elections, marking a significant departure from the events of 2021 when the Government switched off the internet nationwide during polling.

Dr. Abudu Sallam Waiswa, the UCC Head of Legal Affairs, said the Commission has no intention of imposing any form of digital blackout during the upcoming polls.

He noted that maintaining full internet access is not only essential for transparency but also beneficial for electoral stakeholders, including the media, political actors, and the general public.

Speaking this week, Dr. Waiswa emphasized that the circumstances surrounding the 2021 shutdown were unique and not expected to recur.

The 2021 blackout, lasted several days. Since then, digital rights advocates have repeatedly urged the Government to commit to keeping the internet open during electoral periods.

Dr. Waiswa’s latest assurance is expected to calm public concerns following growing speculation about possible restrictions during the 2026 elections. He reiterated that the Commission is working closely with relevant agencies to ensure a secure, transparent, and uninterrupted digital environment throughout the electoral cycle.
