KAMPALA, Uganda — Mrs. Anita Rukundo Tayebwa has been appointed Honorary Consul of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas in Uganda.

Mrs. Tayebwa presented her Letters of Credence to Uganda’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hon. Amb. Adonia Ayebare, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs offices in Kampala.

In her new role, Mrs. Tayebwa pledged to strengthen tourism and private-sector cooperation between Uganda and The Bahamas, with a particular focus on connecting tourism businesses and promoting opportunities between the two countries.

She highlighted the important contribution of tourism to the Bahamian economy, noting that The Bahamas received more than 12.5 million tourists and earned approximately US$5.27 billion from tourism in 2025.

An Honorary Consul is a person appointed by a foreign country to represent and promote its interests in a country where it does not maintain a full diplomatic mission, particularly in areas such as trade, investment, tourism, consular assistance and bilateral relations.

Mrs. Tayebwa is the wife of Uganda’s Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Thomas Tayebwa.

Uganda, by comparison, received approximately 1.64 million international tourists and earned about US$1.62 billion from tourism during the same year.

The appointment is expected to support stronger investment, trade, tourism and business ties between Uganda and The Bahamas, while creating opportunities for greater private-sector engagement.
