The Embassy of Ethiopia in Kampala on Monday hosted an Ethiopian Iftar dinner at Sheraton Kampala Hotel in observance of the 2026 Ramadan fasting period and to promote stronger people-to-people ties between Ethiopians and Ugandans.
The gathering brought together Muslim religious leaders, diplomats, members of the Ethiopian community in Uganda, and other distinguished guests for an evening of prayer, reflection, and fellowship.
The event’s prayer session was led by the Chief Guest, Sheikh Muhammad Ali Waiswa, the Deputy Mufti of the Republic of Uganda, who offered prayers for peace, unity, and continued cooperation among communities.

Members of the Ethiopian diaspora and Kampala’s broader Muslim community also attended the event.
Participants emphasized that such religious observances go beyond spiritual reflection and serve as important networking platforms that strengthen social and cultural bonds within Kampala’s diverse community.
In her remarks, Etsegenet Bezabih Yimenu highlighted the spiritual significance of Ramadan, describing it as a sacred period characterized by compassion, solidarity, and generosity.

“Ramadan is a time to extend kindness and support to those in need and to reinforce the values of unity and mutual care within our communities,” she noted.
Ambassador Etsegenet also reflected on Ethiopia’s longstanding tradition of religious tolerance and coexistence. She recalled the historic moment when Ethiopian Christian rulers welcomed and protected the first followers of Islam who sought refuge in the country, a legacy often cited as one of the earliest examples of interfaith solidarity.

The Ethiopian Embassy regularly organizes cultural and religious events aimed at strengthening diplomatic relations and fostering deeper connections between the Ethiopian community and Ugandan society.
