Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni has received a formal invitation from Emmanuel Macron to participate in the forthcoming Africa–France Forward Summit in Nairobi, signaling Uganda’s elevated role in a shifting diplomatic landscape between Africa and Paris.

The invitation was delivered by Virginie Leroy, France’s Ambassador to Uganda, during a high-level engagement with the Ugandan leader. According to the presidency, the message conveyed France’s intent to deepen strategic cooperation with African partners through a redefined framework that moves beyond traditional aid-based relations.

The Summit, scheduled for May 2026 in Nairobi and co-hosted by William Ruto and President Macron, is expected to bring together African leaders and global stakeholders to chart a new course for Africa–France relations. Key areas of focus include infrastructure financing, energy transition, digital transformation, and industrial value addition.

Uganda’s participation—alongside its designation as a co-host—reflects its growing diplomatic profile in regional and international affairs. Kampala has increasingly positioned itself as a key interlocutor in discussions on infrastructure development, particularly projects such as the Standard Gauge Railway, as well as in emerging sectors like artificial intelligence and energy transition.

Analysts view the invitation as part of a broader recalibration by France, which is seeking to reassert its influence in Africa through partnerships anchored in mutual economic interest, investment, and geopolitical alignment.

The Nairobi Summit is expected to culminate in a strategic declaration that could shape Africa’s engagement not only with France but with other global partners, particularly as Paris prepares to assume the chairmanship of the G7 in June 2026.
