Museveni Calls for Uganda to Harness Iron Ore for Competitive Steel Industry

President Yoweri Museveni has congratulated Dr. Sikander Lalani and Roofings Group on the inauguration of Phase IV Level 2 of the company’s Ultra Modern Rolling Mill Complex, describing the investment as an important milestone in Uganda’s industrialisation journey.

Museveni said the development aligns with the economic vision outlined by the NRM in its Ten-Point Programme after coming to power in 1986, particularly the goal of building an independent, integrated and self-sustaining economy.

He noted that the investment will strengthen local value addition, create employment opportunities and reduce Uganda’s dependence on imported intermediate products.

The President also emphasised the need to harness Uganda’s abundant iron ore resources, including high-grade deposits, to develop a competitive domestic steel industry.

“Uganda has abundant iron ore resources, including high-grade iron ore, and we must use these resources to build a competitive steel industry,” Museveni said.

The expansion of Roofings’ rolling mill capacity is expected to contribute to Uganda’s broader efforts to deepen manufacturing, promote industrial production and retain more value within the domestic economy.
