The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) has formally closed its case in the murder trial of Joan Kagezi, after presenting evidence from 26 witnesses before court.

Court has now directed the defence to file written submissions on a no-case-to-answer by April 17, 2026, and serve the prosecution accordingly.

The prosecution will file its response by May 18, 2026, followed by the defence’s rejoinder due on June 1, 2026.

A ruling on whether the accused have a case to answer is expected on July 3, 2026.

The late Joan Kagezi, who served as Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions, was the head of the International Crimes Department at the ODPP at the time of her death.

She was assassinated on March 30, 2015, in a killing that shocked the nation and raised concerns about the safety of judicial officers.

At the time of her assassination, Kagezi was leading the prosecution in the high-profile 2010 Kyadondo twin bombings case, which involved terror attacks that claimed dozens of lives in Kampala.
