Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba has appointed Brig Gen Asaph Mweteise Nyakikuru as the acting Commander of the Special Forces Command (SFC), the elite unit of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF).
In the appointment announced on Monday, Brig Gen Nyakikuru was also granted the acting rank of Major General, with both the appointment and promotion taking immediate effect.
He replaces Maj Gen David Mugisha, who has been serving as Commander SFC and is set to leave for the National Defence College (NDC) course abroad in the coming months.
The UPDF said Maj Gen Mugisha will be attending the strategic security studies programme after completing what it described as an outstanding tour of duty at the helm of the SFC.
“The UPDF thanks Major General David Mugisha for the outstanding tour of duty as Commander SFC and wish him good luck in his strategic security studies,” said Col Chris Magezi, Acting Director Defence Public Information at the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs (MODVA).
The army also congratulated Acting Maj Gen Nyakikuru on his new assignment, wishing him success as he takes charge of the Special Forces Command.
The Special Forces Command is responsible for specialised operations, including protection of strategic national interests and key installations.
The changes come as the UPDF continues to rotate senior officers through command and professional development assignments as part of its institutional career progression.
