A high-level business delegation from the State of Qatar, led by Mr. Khalid Ahmed Al-Sowaidi and Dr. Rashid Yahya Ssemuddu, Special Presidential Envoy of the State of Qatar, paid a courtesy call on the Governor of the Bank of Uganda, Michael Atingi-Ego, on Wednesday.
According to the BoU, the discussions focused on strengthening Uganda-Qatar economic cooperation, with particular emphasis on opportunities in Islamic banking and the adoption of blockchain technology to modernize financial services.
Governor Atingi-Ego reaffirmed Uganda’s openness to exploring innovative financial solutions that can deepen financial inclusion, attract foreign investment, and expand the country’s banking sector.
Islamic banking, which operates in line with Shariah principles, is increasingly being viewed as a potential growth area for Uganda’s financial industry. Meanwhile, blockchain technology is seen as a tool for enhancing transparency, security, and efficiency in the financial sector.
The Qatari delegation expressed interest in supporting Uganda’s efforts to diversify its financial systems and explore cutting-edge technologies. Both parties agreed to continue technical and policy-level engagements aimed at translating the discussions into concrete projects.
The visit underscores the growing bilateral ties between Uganda and the State of Qatar, with financial sector cooperation emerging as a new frontier of partnership.
