Uganda, China Discuss New Opportunities Under Zero-Tariff Policy

Chinese Ambassador to Uganda Wu Guangrong has paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister Rt. Hon. Robinah Nabbanja, with the two sides discussing ways to deepen political trust and expand practical cooperation between Uganda and China.

The meeting focused on strengthening bilateral relations, including discussions on China’s Global Governance Initiative and how Uganda can better utilise Beijing’s expanded zero-tariff access for African exports.

China began implementing zero-tariff treatment covering 100 percent of tariff lines for the 53 African countries with which it has diplomatic relations on May 1, 2026. The policy is intended to facilitate African exports to the Chinese market and create opportunities for trade, investment and industrial development.

For Uganda, the policy could create additional opportunities for exporters, particularly if the country strengthens production capacity, product standards, value addition and logistics to meet demand in the Chinese market.

The discussions between Ambassador Wu and Prime Minister Nabbanja also underlined the broader strategic dimension of Uganda-China relations, with both sides seeking to translate political goodwill into practical economic benefits for their respective populations.

The engagement comes as China continues to position expanded market access as a key component of its growing economic partnership with Africa.

Starting 1 May 2026, China granted zero-tariff treatment on 100 percent of tariff lines to all 53 African countries with which it maintains diplomatic relations, making China the first major economy to achieve full unilateral zero-tariff coverage for all African diplomatic partners.
