TikToker Katwalo Remanded to Luzira Over Shs322m Gold Deal

KAMPALA, Uganda — Popular businessman and TikTok personality Muwonge Issa, commonly known as “Katwalo,” has been remanded to Luzira Prison after denying allegations that he obtained Shs322.3 million from a businessman in connection with a disputed gold export deal.

Muwonge appeared before City Hall Court Senior Principal Magistrate Grade One Nicholas Aisu on Wednesday, where he was charged with obtaining money by false pretence. He denied the charge.

According to the prosecution, Muwonge and other suspects allegedly obtained US$85,300, equivalent to approximately Shs322.3 million, from businessman Mahomed Farouk after allegedly representing that they could facilitate the export of seven kilogrammes of gold to Dubai.

The prosecution told court that investigations into the matter had been completed and asked the magistrate to set a date for further proceedings.

Muwonge was subsequently remanded to Luzira Prison until September 21, 2026, when he is expected to return to court.

The case centres on the alleged payment made in connection with the purported gold shipment. Prosecutors will be required to present evidence establishing how the money was allegedly obtained, the representations made to Farouk and what happened to the proposed gold export transaction.

Muwonge’s defence will have an opportunity to challenge the prosecution’s evidence as the proceedings continue.

The TikToker’s remand comes as Uganda continues to confront cases involving alleged fraudulent gold transactions, a sector that has previously attracted both local and foreign investors and has been associated with high-value fraud allegations.

Importantly, Muwonge has not been convicted of the offence. The allegations remain subject to determination by the court, and the prosecution will have to prove its case beyond reasonable doubt.

The matter will return before court on September 21, 2026.
