PHOTOS: 8 Destinations, 8 Decades: Ethiopian Airlines Marks Milestone with Women-Led Flights

Ethiopian Airlines marked its 80th anniversary in a remarkable tribute to women in aviation by operating special all-women-led flights to eight international destinations, coinciding with celebrations of International Women’s Day.

The milestone event highlighted the airline’s eight decades of service while recognizing the contributions of women across the aviation industry—from pilots and cabin crew to engineers, technicians, and ground staff. The initiative symbolized both the airline’s historic journey and its commitment to promoting gender equality and empowering women in traditionally male-dominated sectors.

In Windhoek, the celebrations were attended by Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, the President of Namibia, who joined the airline at Hosea Kutako International Airport for the commemoration. The event combined the airline’s 80th anniversary festivities with global observances of International Women’s Day.

Addressing the gathering under the global theme “Rights, Justice, Action for All Women and Girls,” President Nandi-Ndaitwah reflected on the strides made in advancing opportunities for women and girls across various sectors. She emphasized that while progress has been made, sustained commitment and collective effort remain necessary to achieve full gender equality.
