The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) has clarified that the ongoing deployment of Military Police at road checkpoints across the Kampala Metropolitan Area is part of a joint operation with the Uganda Police Force aimed at restoring discipline on the roads and enforcing traffic regulations.
In a statement issued Tuesday, March 10, 2026, Colonel Chris Magezi, Acting Director of Defence Public Information at the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs (MODVA/UPDF), said the operation began on Monday, March 9, and will continue for as long as necessary.
According to the statement, the operation is targeting motorists who violate traffic rules, including those driving unregistered vehicles or vehicles without number plates, as well as individuals illegally using sirens.
The UPDF emphasized that the initiative also seeks to curb criminal activities linked to some motorists operating on Ugandan roads.
Colonel Magezi dismissed speculation circulating in some quarters that the checkpoints were intended to apprehend National Unity Platform (NUP) leader Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, commonly known as Bobi Wine.
“No one is looking for or interested in the NUP leader,” the statement noted, adding that the objective of the joint deployment is strictly to restore discipline and ensure full compliance with traffic regulations.
The UPDF further pointed out that such enforcement measures are not new and have previously been implemented to achieve similar objectives.
Motorists, including motorcyclists, have been urged to cooperate with both the Military Police Brigade and the Uganda Police Traffic Department during the operation.
