The Honorary Consul of the Syrian Arab Republic in Uganda, Dr. Tamouh Moustafa, has said it is unlikely that Vicky Ajok, the Ugandan housemaid accused of killing her 87-year-old employer, Huda Shaarawi, in Damascus, will face the death penalty.

Dr. Moustafa also dismissed widespread social media reports suggesting that an execution date had been set. He clarified that Ajok has appeared in court only once since her arrest, and the case is still in the early stages of legal proceedings.

The consul’s remarks come amid growing concern in Uganda over the treatment of its nationals abroad, highlighting the importance of diplomatic engagement and consular support in high-profile foreign legal cases.

Ajok, who reportedly worked in Shaarawi’s residence in Damascus, was arrested following the murder of the elderly woman. She reportedly confessed to killing Shaarawi. Details of the incident remain limited, and authorities in Syria have yet to release a formal update on the ongoing investigation.

Ugandan officials have urged patience and emphasized that proper diplomatic channels are being followed to ensure Ajok receives fair treatment under Syrian law.
