The Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Justice Simon Mugenyi Byabakama, has officially announced that Uganda’s next General Elections will be held on January 15, 2026.
Speaking from the Commission headquarters in Kampala, Justice Byabakama said the electoral body has finalized the roadmap and is now moving into the critical phase of preparations for the polls.
“The Commission wishes to inform the people of Uganda and the presidential candidates that presidential polling will take place on the 15th of January, 2026,” Justice Byabakama stated.
He further clarified that campaigns for all elective positions will officially end 48 hours before polling day, in accordance with the electoral laws.
“This means that campaigns shall stop on the 13th of January, 2026, to allow voters time for reflection and to enable the Commission to prepare adequately for polling,” he explained.
The 2026 elections will see Ugandans vote for the President, Members of Parliament, and Local Government leaders across the country.
Justice Byabakama emphasized that the Commission is committed to conducting a free, fair, and transparent electoral process, and urged all political actors to adhere to the electoral guidelines to ensure peaceful and credible elections.
The announcement sets the stage for what is expected to be a highly contested election season, as political parties and candidates intensify mobilization and campaign activities ahead of the polls.
