President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has outlined Uganda’s economic journey and future direction as he presided over the NRA Victory 40th Anniversary celebrations held today at Kololo Independence Grounds.

Reflecting on the period since 1986, President Museveni said Uganda has undergone five major phases of economic recovery, beginning with the restoration of stability after years of turmoil, followed by diversification and value addition. He noted that the country has now firmly entered the knowledge economy, with growth anchored in agriculture, manufacturing, services, and the emerging oil and gas sector.

The President highlighted key milestones, including the expansion of local manufacturing, which now supplies about 65 percent of goods in Ugandan supermarkets, continued wealth creation through agriculture and services, the rollout of Kiira electric vehicles on Ugandan roads, and the commencement of oil production in the Lake Albert region later this year.

“These achievements demonstrate how far Uganda has come and the strength of our economic foundation,” Museveni said.

Turning to the recent elections, the President disclosed that while he received 8 million votes, many supporters were unable to participate due to intimidation, violence, and internal indiscipline.

He emphasized the need to address these challenges to improve political participation, safeguard stability, and ensure that all Ugandans are fully involved in the country’s transformation agenda.

The NRA Victory Day commemorates the 1986 takeover that ushered in the current government, an event Museveni described as the cornerstone of Uganda’s peace, stability, and long-term development.
