Final preparations are in high gear at Bukedea Teaching Hospital ahead of Rajiv Ruparelia Memorial Eye Camp set to run this weekend, from March 27 to 29, 2026.
The medical outreach, spearheaded by the Ruparelia Foundation in collaboration with Mulago National Referral Hospital and C-Care, is designed to deliver critical eye care services to underserved communities across Eastern and Northern Uganda.
Held in tribute to businessman Rajiv Ruparelia, the camp will provide a range of free services, including eye examinations, cataract detection, distribution of prescription glasses, and surgical treatment for selected patients in need of cataract operations.
Organizers anticipate screening more than 2,000 people, with hundreds expected to undergo corrective procedures targeting preventable vision conditions that continue to impact many Ugandans.
The initiative is open to both children and adults, with residents from districts such as Bukedea, Soroti, Mbale, Gulu, Lira, Tororo, and Kapchorwa urged to take advantage of the opportunity. Local leaders have also been called upon to mobilize communities, especially individuals facing vision challenges.
Speaking during the recent launch, Prof. Lawrence Muganga revealed that Victoria University will deploy 80 students from its nursing, midwifery, and pharmacy programs to support healthcare teams throughout the exercise.
He emphasized the life-changing potential of the camp, particularly for young learners, noting that improved eyesight can significantly enhance education outcomes and future prospects.
“Efforts like this give people a renewed sense of hope and opportunity,” he noted, stressing that good vision is essential for learning, productivity, and overall well-being.
Backed by a strong partnership of medical experts and corporate support, the upcoming eye camp is expected to restore sight and uplift the quality of life for thousands across the Teso sub-region.
