The Embassy of Sweden in Kampala has clarified that Ugandan applicants for Swedish migration services will not be required to travel to Nairobi for in-person procedures, correcting earlier public understanding about the recent restructuring of services.
In a response to UG Diplomat, Sweden’s Ambassador to Uganda, Maria Håkansson, stated that while migration decision-making has been centralized under the Embassy of Sweden in Nairobi, applicants will continue to complete interviews and biometric submissions in Kampala.
“Applicants will not be required to travel to Nairobi. In-person procedures such as interviews and biometric submission will still take place at the Swedish Embassy in Kampala,” the Ambassador clarified.
The correction follows the announcement that, effective 2 March 2026, the Kampala mission will no longer handle or respond directly to migration inquiries, with such matters now managed administratively from Nairobi.
Meanwhile, short-stay Schengen visa applications, including tourism, business and visits of up to 90 days, will continue to be submitted locally in Kampala through VFS Global. The embassy itself does not process these applications, which are handled through established regional systems.
Other consular services, including document legalization and assistance to Swedish citizens in Uganda, remain fully available at the Kampala embassy.
The clarification is expected to reassure applicants concerned about potential additional travel costs, confirming that while case management has shifted regionally, physical procedures will still be conducted in Uganda.
