Uganda has reiterated its commitment to regional peace, conflict prevention, and genocide avoidance following a high-level meeting between Okello Oryem and Chaloka Beyani at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Kampala.

The courtesy call brought together the Ugandan Minister of State for International Affairs and the United Nations Under-Secretary-General and Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide to exchange views on regional peace and security, with a focus on strengthening mechanisms for the peaceful settlement of disputes.

During the meeting, Oryem emphasized Uganda’s long-standing role in promoting stability across the region, particularly through its engagements in Somalia and South Sudan. He underscored the country’s commitment to practical, results-driven preventive measures aimed at averting armed conflict and its devastating consequences, including genocide.

While acknowledging Uganda’s active contributions, the Minister noted that some international narratives have misrepresented the country’s efforts. He nonetheless reaffirmed Uganda’s resolve to continue working within multilateral frameworks such as the United Nations, the African Union, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development, and the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region, alongside bilateral partnerships with friendly nations.

The discussions also addressed the ongoing crisis in Sudan, where both leaders reviewed diplomatic efforts aimed at achieving a ceasefire and a sustainable political settlement. They stressed the importance of inclusive dialogue among the warring parties and called for stronger support to regional peace initiatives.

Additionally, the meeting highlighted the need to bolster judicial systems at both national and regional levels to ensure accountability for war crimes and improve access to justice for victims of conflict.

Beyani, who was appointed by António Guterres in August 2025, is currently on a regional tour engaging key stakeholders involved in peace processes. Following his engagements in Uganda, he is expected to continue to Juba, where he will hold consultations with government officials and other actors on issues related to his mandate.
