Museveni, US Secretary of State Rubio Discuss Migration and Trade Ties

Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni has held talks with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, focusing on migration cooperation, reciprocal trade, and strengthening commercial ties between Kampala and Washington.

According to a statement from the US State Department, the two leaders discussed opportunities to deepen bilateral relations in areas of mutual interest, including managing migration flows and expanding trade opportunities.

The Secretary also praised Uganda for what Washington described as a “model of regional stability,” highlighting the country’s contributions to peacekeeping missions in East Africa.

The conversation comes amid ongoing discussions about migration agreements between the United States and several African nations.

Uganda recently clarified that any cooperation with Washington on migration would be temporary and conditional, with restrictions on accepting individuals with criminal records or unaccompanied minors.

Uganda is already one of the world’s largest refugee-hosting countries, sheltering nearly two million people displaced from neighbouring states such as South Sudan, Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Kampala has consistently framed its refugee policy as a demonstration of its commitment to regional peace and humanitarian responsibility.

The latest high-level engagement indicates the strategic importance Washington places on Uganda, both as a trade partner and as a security actor in the Horn of Africa and Great Lakes.
