KAMPALA — Works and Transport Minister Fred Byamukama has given taxi owners and operators until Monday to remove vehicles in poor mechanical condition from Uganda’s roads, as the government intensifies efforts to improve road safety.
The directive forms part of a 100-day road safety campaign that is being rolled out initially across Greater Kampala, with authorities targeting vehicles and practices considered a danger to road users.
Byamukama said taxi operators must ensure that vehicles put on the road are in good mechanical condition and meet the required safety standards.
The minister warned that vehicles found to be mechanically unsafe could be removed from operation as enforcement agencies step up inspections during the campaign.
The initiative comes amid growing concerns over road crashes and the condition of some public transport vehicles operating in and around the capital.
The 100-day campaign is expected to bring together government agencies and other stakeholders to strengthen enforcement, improve compliance with road safety regulations and promote responsible road use.
Taxi operators have therefore been urged to inspect and repair their vehicles before the Monday deadline to avoid enforcement action.
The government says the campaign will help restore discipline on the roads and reduce preventable crashes, particularly in the Greater Kampala metropolitan area.
