Diamond Trust Bank (DTB) Uganda has broken its silence on the death of customer Lubega Fahad, revealing that it reported him to police over a disputed transaction days before he passed away, even as police dismiss claims that he was a victim of mob justice at one of the bank’s branches.
In a statement released on Sunday, DTB said its last interaction with Lubega was at its Naalya Branch on June 2 following an alleged complaint raised by an individual linked to a transaction he was involved in.
“The matter was reported to the Uganda Police, and he was subsequently taken into police custody for further investigations,” the bank said.
DTB extended condolences to Lubega’s family and friends but declined to comment further on the circumstances surrounding his death, saying it was cooperating fully with investigators.
The bank’s statement comes amid growing public debate and social media allegations that Lubega was attacked by a mob at a DTB branch before his death.
However, Uganda Police has already dismissed the reports, describing them as unverified. Police said no incident of mob action at DTB Ntinda had been reported to or registered at Kira Road Police Station and urged anyone with credible information to come forward.
The latest developments have raised more questions than answers.
While DTB has confirmed reporting Lubega to police, neither the bank nor law enforcement authorities have disclosed the nature of the transaction complaint, how long he remained in custody, or what transpired between his arrest and his death on June 10.
The revelation shifts attention to the period after police took over the case, with investigators now under pressure to establish the exact circumstances that led to Lubega’s death.
As investigations continue, the mystery surrounding the deceased customer’s final days remains unresolved.
