Uganda’s Defence Attachés and Defence Advisors accredited to missions abroad have convened for a high-level retreat aimed at strengthening coordination, professionalism, and strategic engagement in advancing the country’s interests overseas.
Opening the three-day retreat, the Chief of Joint Staff of the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces, Lt Gen Jack Bakasumba, underscored the critical role defence diplomats play in safeguarding and promoting Uganda’s strategic interests abroad.
“Your major role shall be to present and protect Uganda’s strategic interests by working closely with ambassadors and heads of diplomatic missions. You are required to uphold professionalism and promote coordination,” Lt Gen Bakasumba said.
The retreat brings together Uganda’s military representatives stationed in different countries to align on emerging security, diplomatic, and geopolitical priorities while enhancing cooperation with civilian diplomatic missions.
Officials said the engagements will focus on strengthening inter-agency coordination, improving diplomatic communication, and enhancing Uganda’s visibility and partnerships internationally.
The retreat will also feature engagements with key stakeholders from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Uganda Tourism Board, and other government institutions involved in promoting Uganda’s strategic, economic, and security interests abroad.
The meeting comes at a time when Uganda continues to deepen its regional and international security cooperation, while also leveraging defence diplomacy as a tool for peacebuilding, economic engagement, and bilateral relations.
