In a bid to address the ongoing crisis in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), leaders from the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the East African Community (EAC) have agreed to hold a joint caucus aimed at restoring peace and security in the region.

Kenyan President William Ruto announced the development, emphasizing that peace and security are essential for trade and investment across Africa. The high-level extraordinary summit is set to take place in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, bringing together key regional leaders to discuss collective strategies for stabilizing the conflict-hit DRC.

Among the confirmed participants are:

  • President Samia Suluhu Hassan (Tanzania)
  • President Félix Tshisekedi (Democratic Republic of the Congo)
  • President Paul Kagame (Rwanda)
  • President Cyril Ramaphosa (South Africa)
  • President Yoweri Museveni (Uganda)
  • President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud (Somalia)

The eastern DRC has been plagued by violence involving various armed groups, creating a humanitarian crisis and threatening regional stability. The summit aims to enhance coordination between SADC and EAC to formulate a joint approach for long-term peace efforts.

This engagement follows recent escalations in the eastern DRC and the withdrawal of the East African Regional Force (EACRF) in late 2023. The summit is expected to discuss security interventions, diplomatic engagements, and economic recovery efforts to ensure lasting peace in the region.

Why should countries and it’s nationals claims being democratically living when they can’t even do 1% of democracy characteristics? The leader of M23 if is Congolese why can’t he register as a presidential candidate and tell the voters his manifesto? If they buy they vote for him or her to lead the country otherwise with all due respect whoever is supporting nonsensical of disturbing peace for citizens is beyond the poverty they cry of.
