General Muhoozi Announces Decision Not to Run in 2026, Endorses President Museveni

In a surprising announcement, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), has declared that he will not be running for office in the 2026 elections. Citing divine guidance, the General said his focus will be on “God’s Army” instead of political ambitions.*

In a statement shared on social media, General Muhoozi stated, “Almighty God told me to focus on His Army first. So, I fully endorse President Yoweri Museveni in the next elections.” This message, which has already sparked widespread discussion, appears to end speculation about General Muhoozi’s potential presidential bid, which had been the subject of growing rumors.

The endorsement of President Museveni, who has been in power for over three decades, further solidifies the alliance within the ruling party, the National Resistance Movement (NRM), with Muhoozi pledging his support for the veteran leader. General Muhoozi has been considered by many as a possible successor to his father, but this recent announcement indicates that he will remain committed to his military duties and spiritual calling in the coming years.

The CDF’s decision to bow out of the political race in favor of President Museveni could shape the dynamics of the 2026 elections, as both national and regional observers had been closely watching for any move from the General toward the political stage.

General Muhoozi, who has often taken to social media to share his views on various issues, has a significant following among Uganda’s younger population, and his influence in both military and political circles remains formidable. His endorsement is expected to further strengthen President Museveni’s position ahead of the 2026 polls.
