Museveni and Ex-Botswana President Khama Discuss Conservation Strategies

Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni hosted a meeting at State House Entebbe, with H.E. Ian Khama, the former President of Botswana, and a delegation from Space for Giants, a conservation charity led by Dr. Max Graham.

The discussions centered around harnessing social-economic value through conservation and innovation, with a particular focus on the preservation of Africa’s natural resources.

During the meeting, President Museveni and H.E. Ian Khama emphasized the importance of involving local communities in conservation efforts to safeguard Africa’s rich biodiversity. They underscored the critical role of community engagement in preserving natural habitats and wildlife for future generations.

A key area of focus during the discussions was the Pian-Upe game reserve, which is currently facing degradation due to various environmental challenges. President Museveni expressed his commitment to supporting conservationists in unlocking the natural value of the area, highlighting the importance of sustainable management practices to ensure the preservation of its unique ecosystem.

The meeting also explored innovative approaches to conservation that can generate social-economic benefits for local communities while safeguarding natural resources. President Museveni and the delegation from Space for Giants exchanged ideas on how to leverage technology and community partnerships to promote eco-tourism, sustainable agriculture, and other income-generating activities that align with conservation objectives.

In his remarks, President Museveni reaffirmed Uganda’s dedication to environmental conservation and sustainable development, emphasizing the need for collaborative efforts to address environmental challenges and promote socio-economic growth. He commended the work of conservation organizations like Space for Giants in championing conservation initiatives across Africa.
