Gov’t Gives Shs30m to Families of Ugandans Killed in South Africa Xenophobic Attacks

KAMPALA — The Government of Uganda has extended financial support to families of three Ugandan nationals who lost their lives in xenophobic attacks in South Africa, as efforts continue to support citizens affected by the violence.

Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs Hon. Haruna Kasolo Kyeyune, on behalf of President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, met the bereaved families on Wednesday and handed over a condolence contribution of Shs10 million to each family.

Kasolo delivered the President’s and Government’s condolences, assuring the families that Uganda stands with them during the difficult period. He revealed that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, working with other government agencies, had facilitated the return of the bodies of the deceased to Uganda for a dignified burial.

The Minister added that government is coordinating the safe return of other Ugandans who wish to leave affected areas in South Africa and return home.

He further reaffirmed government’s commitment to helping returnees rebuild their lives through existing socio-economic empowerment initiatives, including the Parish Development Model (PDM), which seeks to create sustainable livelihoods and expand economic opportunities.

The families thanked President Museveni and the Government of Uganda for facilitating the repatriation of their loved ones, offering financial assistance, and maintaining communication throughout the process.

Ambassador Johnny Muhindo, the Head of the Diaspora Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said the ministry continues to engage Ugandan communities abroad and strengthen measures aimed at protecting the welfare of citizens living and working outside the country
