KAMPALA – President Yoweri Museveni has appointed State Minister for Foreign Affairs, Haruna Kyeyune Kasolo, as Uganda’s Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs, temporarily placing him at the helm of the ministry following changes in the country’s diplomatic leadership.

A letter signed by President Museveni and dated June 22, 2026, cites Article 99(1) of the Constitution, appointing Kasolo to serve as Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs “in the absence of a substantive Minister.”

The appointment comes after the President recently named Amb. Adonia Ayebare as Minister of Foreign Affairs and Calvin Echodu as State Minister for International Affairs. However, the two appointments have not yet taken effect as they await resolution of issues surrounding their reported dual citizenship status.

Reacting to his appointment, Kasolo expressed gratitude to President Museveni for the confidence placed in him.

“I am profoundly honoured by the trust and confidence reposed in me by H.E. President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni through my appointment as Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs. I extend my sincere gratitude to His Excellency for this opportunity to serve our nation in this capacity.

He added, “I remain committed to upholding Uganda’s foreign policy objectives, advancing our diplomatic engagements and serving with integrity, professionalism and unwavering dedication in the pursuit of our national interests.”

Kasolo has been serving as State Minister for Foreign Affairs and is expected to oversee the ministry’s day-to-day operations until a substantive minister assumes office. His acting appointment ensures continuity in Uganda’s diplomatic engagements as the government addresses the pending legal and administrative matters relating to the new ministerial appointees.

The Foreign Affairs Ministry plays a central role in advancing Uganda’s bilateral and multilateral relations, promoting economic diplomacy, and representing the country’s interests on the international stage.
