Kampala; Guard Jailed 18 Years for Aggravated Homosexuality

The High Court of Uganda sitting in Kampala has convicted and sentenced a security guard, Vincent Tumwesigye, to 18 years in prison for aggravated homosexuality following a plea bargain.

Presiding over the case, Justice Isaac Muwata handed down the sentence on April 23, 2026, after the accused voluntarily pleaded guilty at the start of trial proceedings.

The prosecution, led by Timothy Amerit from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, had assembled four witnesses and was fully prepared to proceed with the hearing before the unexpected plea bargain was entered.

Abuse of Trust and Vulnerability

Court heard that the 30-year-old convict, who worked as a security guard at the victim’s residence, subjected a six-year-old child to repeated sexual abuse. Evidence presented revealed a disturbing pattern of exploitation, manipulation, and intimidation.

The child reportedly suffered physical injuries, with medical examinations confirming trauma to the genital area. The prosecution further established that the accused used threats—including death threats and fabricated fears—to silence and control the victim.

The abuse caused significant emotional and psychological distress to the child.

Prior to the trial, the accused had applied for bail, but the court declined the request, allowing the case to proceed to full hearing.

However, in a decisive turn at the commencement of the trial, Tumwesigye opted for a plea bargain, admitting guilt and accepting a pre-agreed sentence.

Justice Muwata upheld the agreement, convicting and sentencing the accused to 18 years’ imprisonment.

Legal observers note that the plea bargain not only ensured a swift conclusion to the case but also spared the minor from the trauma of testifying in open court.

The conviction marks a significant step in the enforcement of child protection laws and underscores the judiciary’s stance against abuse of vulnerable persons.
