Uganda Airlines Leases Boeing 787 From Ethiopian Airlines for Long-Haul Operations

Uganda Airlines has announced a partnership with Ethiopian Airlines to wet lease a Boeing 787 aircraft to support its long-haul passenger operations.

In a notice issued on March 7, the national carrier said the short-term arrangement took effect immediately and is intended to ensure operational continuity on its long-haul routes.

Under a wet lease arrangement, the aircraft is provided together with crew, maintenance, and insurance by the leasing airline. Uganda Airlines said the move will help enhance network reliability and maintain service delivery for passengers while the airline manages its current operational requirements.

The airline also indicated it is closely monitoring the operating environment in the Middle East, particularly regarding flights to Dubai, and advised passengers to check for updates through its official communication channels.

The development is particularly notable given the arrival of Girma Wake, the former Ethiopian Airlines chief executive credited with transforming the Ethiopian flag carrier into one of Africa’s most successful aviation brands. Wake, who led Ethiopian Airlines between 2004 and 2011 and later chaired its board, built a reputation for forging strategic partnerships and expanding African airline networks. Wake has been confirmed as the new consultant and advisor to Uganda Airlines.

The Boeing 787, commonly known as the Dreamliner, is widely used on intercontinental routes due to its fuel efficiency and long-range capabilities.
