KAMPALA, Uganda — Health Ministry Permanent Secretary Dr. Diana Atwine and Minister Dr. Chris Baryomunsi have declared their commitment to strengthening disease prevention as Uganda seeks to improve public health outcomes.
The two officials made the commitment on Friday at the close of the 4th Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Summit held at Speke Resort Munyonyo in Kampala.

They were joined by Kampala Lord Mayor, Ronald Balimwezo, a member of the opposition National Unity Platform (NUP), and opposition shadow health minister Hon Amaniyo Draville Sheilah, who also pledged support for the Ministry of Health's efforts to strengthen disease prevention.
The commitments highlighted the importance of collaboration across political divides in addressing public health challenges, promoting preventive healthcare and improving public awareness of disease risks.

Baryomunsi also called on religious leaders to intensify their support for health promotion and disease prevention, emphasising the role faith institutions can play in encouraging communities to embrace healthy practices and seek appropriate medical care.
He drew a connection between religious ministry and healthcare, arguing that the healing miracles performed by Jesus Christ could be understood as serving medical functions.

The minister's remarks underscored the potential for religious institutions to complement the work of health professionals by mobilising communities, promoting health education and encouraging preventive measures.
The summit brought together government officials, legislators, private sector representatives and other stakeholders to discuss strategies for strengthening health promotion and preventing disease.

This commitments made at its conclusion emphasised the need for sustained cooperation between government institutions, political leaders, religious organisations and communities to reduce the burden of preventable diseases in Uganda.
