IGAD Chief Urges Stronger Backing for Somalia Stabilization Mission

April 25, 2025

Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu, Executive Secretary of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), urged member states and international partners to bolster their support for Somalia's stabilization efforts.

His appeal is contained in a statement to the ministerial meeting of Troop Contributing Countries (TCCs) to the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) underway in Kampala.

"There is a need to consider establishing backup supply mechanisms. IGAD countries should be prepared to open their facilities as logistics hubs for our troops who are holding the terrorists at bay," Dr. Workneh said.

He emphasized the critical need for a unified and well-funded approach to counter-terrorism in Somalia, highlighting the importance of protecting civilians and strengthening Somali institutions.

He acknowledged the progress made by the Somali government and security forces in combating Al-Shabaab but cautioned that sustained regional and international support is essential to consolidate these gains.

"IGAD stands with you, ready to work hand in hand until our shared vision of a secure Somalia in 2029 becomes reality," he said.

Today, the AUSSOM Extraordinary Summit of Heads of State and Government is meeting to finalize timelines, financial frameworks, and the long-term roadmap for AU engagement in Somalia.
