KAMPALA, November 5, 2026 — Uganda’s government has secured the release of Felix Adupe, a Ugandan victim of human trafficking who was detained in Myanmar, Foreign Affairs Minister Adonia Ayebare has announced.
In a statement, Ayebare said Adupe was released by Myanmar authorities at 5:15 pm local time on Thursday and handed over to Edan, a non-governmental organisation that has been coordinating his treatment and safe custody.
Adupe and 20 other detained Ugandans are expected to be handed over to Uganda’s Ambassador to Myanmar, Betty Bigombe, next week in Yangon.
The government will subsequently arrange their transportation back to Uganda.
Ayebare said Uganda continues to negotiate with authorities in Myanmar to secure the release of more Ugandans who remain missing in the country.
The latest development marks progress in Uganda’s efforts to secure the release and repatriation of its nationals affected by human trafficking in Myanmar.
The government has not yet provided further details about the circumstances surrounding Adupe’s detention or the identities of the other Ugandans expected to be repatriated.
