Gov’t, UN Launch $41m Joint Program for Data and Statistics to Tackle SDG Challenges

A significant step towards addressing Uganda’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) data challenges has been taken with the launch of the Joint Program for Data and Statistics.

The initiative, spanning from 2023 to 2025, is a collaborative effort involving 12 United Nations (UN) agencies, led by Susan Namondo, the UN Resident Coordinator, in partnership with the Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development, and the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS).

It is anchored on Uganda’s National Development Plan (NDP) III 2020/21 -2024/25, UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework 2021-2025, Third Plan for National Statistical Development 2020/21-2024/25.

In her remarks during the launch event, Susan Namondo expressed her enthusiasm about the shift in collaboration between the UN and the Government of Uganda. She highlighted the importance of embracing positive change and anticipated valuable insights to emerge from the two-year journey with the Joint Program for Data and Statistics.

“We anticipate valuable insights from our two-year (2023-2025) journey with the Joint Programme for Data and Statistics. Let’s stay prepared to harness synergies and scale up, while celebrating a fresh approach,” remarked Susan Namondo.

The initiative aims to streamline data collection processes, enhance statistical capabilities, and address the challenges hindering Uganda’s progress towards achieving the SDGs. The collaboration involves a commitment from 12 UN agencies to work closely with the Ugandan government to ensure the success of the program.

Rt Hon Rebecca Kadaga, the First Deputy Prime Minister of Uganda, stressed the urgency of obtaining results from the Data and Statistics program. She emphasized that accurate and up-to-date data is crucial for managing the fair distribution of resources and making informed decisions based on evidence.

Dr. Albert Byamugisha (PhD), the UBOS Board Chair, also emphasized the significance of the program. He highlighted the importance of accurate statistical data for effective decision-making and expressed confidence in the collaboration between the UN agencies, the government, and UBOS.

The Joint Program for Data and Statistics is expected to bring about positive change and contribute to Uganda’s efforts in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. The collaborative approach reflects a commitment to improving data infrastructure, fostering partnerships, and ultimately driving positive outcomes for the nation.
